Asterix the Gaul is French series of comic books, created by Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo in 1959. It tells of an imaginary Gaul village in approximately 50 BC that withstands the Roman conquest of Gaul, in part due to a magic potion made by the village druid, Panoramix. Most prominent in the series are the adventures of the Gaul warrior Asterix and his friend Obelix.
The names of the characters are puns, but the reader doesn't have to recognize them as such to enjoy the stories. This is characteristic for the series, which is filled with puns, cameo appearances and other real world references, but are can equally enjoyable just for the stories themselves.
